“Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.”
I’m not entirely sure who said that (Google suggests several people, including Elvis Costello) but I’m inclined to agree. Not because I don’t enjoy pieces of writing on music. In fact it’s quite the opposite – when it’s done well it’s brilliant. But it’s incredibly hard to do, or at least it is for me.
So when I asked the Twitter hive-mind for topics to write about, it’s a bit strange that this appealed to me the most:
I like this idea. It’s an excuse to trawl through my old diaries and see what songs I was obsessing about in 2004. I get to write about the things I feel on hearing a track from Justified or 8701. I can tell everyone exactly what Arctic Monkeys’ debut album smells like to me.
It’s basically going to be self-indulgent; a massive dose of nostalgia and I can’t wait.
